Kinja'd!!!

So my friend texts me that her 2011 Rav4 had a CEL and then overheated. A mechanic told her coolant got into the engine & it’s probably toast.

Question - do they make Jasper engines for these? Where could someone get a new, or even a rebuilt engine for a Rav4? I’ve no experience with JDM, so I don’t know what to tell her.

Any suggestions Oppo?

You’re right, I suppose I did know that was the answer.

Sadly, my friend just wants her appliance fixed, no Jalop will she ever be.

Get a used motor. I don’t know the engine but am assuming that being a toyota, the head gasket or cracked head/block is an unusual failure is likely an outlier. As such, replace the engine with one with reasonable miles from a wrecked vehicle and move on.

By the way, have the mechanic determine cause of coolant leak. You’d hate to find out it was a water cooled oil cooler or something like head gasket that could repeat with then new engine. If it was a head gasket, I would have the mechanic replace it while it was out of the car as well as any other wear items (water pump, idler, cam belt if equipped, etc.

My in-laws one of those was drinking a bunch of oil until they traded it in at 120,000, (a quart every 1500 miles even using a heavier weight oil.) A used motor might not be the best option...

Might be a cheap rebuild, but someone with knowledge has to look.
